Honoring Alfredo Ronsisvalle: A Hero from the Battle of Jutland

At The Ronsisvalle Heritage, we are proud to remember and honor the courageous legacy of Alfredo Ronsisvalle, a member of our family who gave his life in service to his country during World War I.

Alfredo served as a bandsman in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Defence, one of the key battleships involved in the pivotal Battle of Jutland.

Who Was Alfredo Ronsisvalle?

Born in Senglea, Malta, on March 12, 1878, Alfredo Ronsisvalle led a distinguished career in the Royal Navy. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, reflecting his dedication, discipline, and commitment to service. He was also a family man, leaving behind his wife, Caterina, as noted in records from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

On May 31, 1916, during the Battle of Jutland, HMS Defence faced an intense onslaught from the German fleet. Tragically, the ship was destroyed in a massive explosion after it was hit, and Alfredo, along with all 903 crew members aboard, perished.

The Battle of Jutland: A Defining Moment

The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of World War I, fought between the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet. It involved 250 ships and over 100,000 men, marking a significant event in the war. While the battle ended in a strategic stalemate, it showcased the immense power of naval warfare and the tremendous sacrifices made by those serving at sea.
